About
b. 1998
Isobel Scott-Malden lives and works in London, UK.
She had always wanted to paint but focused on sculpture and other crafts until she studied art history and was inspired to teach herself to paint in oil.
She had her debut sell-out solo show in 2021 and was the winner of the Women in Art Emerson Award for Young Woman Artist (2021) and the Women in Art People's Vote prize (2021).
She featured in the Royal Society of British Artists Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in 2024. Her painting was the first to sell in the show and was awarded Highly Commended by The Philip de Laszlo Foundation. She was also in The Royal Institute of Oil Painters Annual Exhibition in late 2024 and returned to the Mall Galleries again for the 3rd time in one year for the RBA Annual Exhibition in 2025 where her painting sold before the exhibition opened.
10 of her paintings were featured at The Affordable Art Fair, Hampstead in May 2025 with her work also appearing in the 'Celebrating Female Diversity' and 'New Artist's Display' stands. She was also in the RA Summer Exhibition 2025.
She was longlisted for the international 2023 Jackson's Painting Prize in the top 4% of 11,000+ entries. Her work has featured in group shows in London galleries and further afield, including The Gallery at Green & Stone Summer Show 2024 where her painting was used as the cover image for the whole exhibition.
Isobel takes inspiration from her surroundings, art history, poetry and her imagination. She tries to create work that is detailed, meaningful, and tends to have a dialogue with the past.
Her paintings mainly cut through to clear and intense realism whilst retaining an other-worldly quality and they often have a sense of precarity or an unconscious feeling to them that has a life of its own beyond the subject. She works instinctively across a wide range of genres - painting exactly what she wants to paint, how she wants to paint it, with a particular focus on the intricacies of light (and the presence, or absence, of a tiger).
She is self-taught and works in oil. Her style is precise and labour-intensive so she takes a long time to consider her compositions and then meticulously realise them. Each painting can take up to three months to complete.
