I used a still from the film 'Daughters of the Dust' (1991) - written and directed by Julie Dash - as a reference for this painting because I was struck by the beauty of the perfectly composed shots and use of washed out colour. Set in 1902, it tells the story of three generations of Gullah women in the Peazant family on Saint Helena Island as they prepare to migrate off the island and out of the Southern US into the North.
