The painting in the painting is thought to be of Aubrey Beardsley by Walter Sickert (1894) and hangs in Tate Britain. In it Beardsley had been attending the unveiling of a memorial for the poet John Keats who also died of tuberculosis at the same age as Beardsley would four years after this was painted (25). Beardsley is ill at the time of the painting, and maybe this explains why he appears so delicate.
